Dog pulling

Dog pulling covers the sports where the dog pulls ahead in a harness: in front of a bike or kick scooter, in front of a sled on snow, or in front of you as you run, known as canicross. The dog runs in a pulling harness on a line with a shock absorber, and the handler steers by voice.

Three ways to pull

  • Bike: bikejoring, with a bike or a kick scooter. The fastest, and the handler brakes.
  • Sled: on snow, with a sled, a pulk or skis (skijoring). From one dog up to a whole team.
  • Running (canicross): you run with the dog attached to a waist belt. The gentlest start for dog and handler.

Keep in mind

  • Use a pulling harness that fits the dog, never a collar, and a line with a shock absorber.
  • Build distance gradually, and let a young dog finish growing before it pulls hard; ask your vet if unsure.
  • Heat is the big risk: pull early in the morning, carry water, and stop if the dog tires.

In the app

Hundsporter keeps your dog pulling diary: choose what the dog pulled, enter distance and time, and the speed is worked out, and for running, the pace in minutes per kilometre. The diary sums distance, average speed and best speed for each way of pulling.
